THE TECHNIQUE
Essentrics lengthens muscles while it strengthens them, leaving the muscles looking long and lean. Concentric training shortens them, and bulks them up. Eccentric training is more challenging than concentric training, which equates to burning more calories. With consistent Essentrics, your body will begin to change shape as you sculpt your hips, thighs, glutes, arms, back and stomach. This long, lean muscle tone should come as no surprise seeing as the main strengthening technique of this program is the same as in ballet.
Essentrics is a full body weight-free eccentric training program, which is exactly what ballet dancers do. It is strength training that simultaneously incorporates lengthening of muscles in the movements.
Two of the most common goals in the fitness world are to become slimmer and more toned, both of which are achieved through regular practice of Essentrics (2-3x per week). Slenderizing is about making the muscles look lean and thin, and strengthening (or toning) is about muscular strength, elasticity, and cellular health, which is what we’ll be doing in our fitness program together.

All movement requires muscles. Muscles have millions of cells that contain mitochondria (furnaces that burn fuel or calories). The stronger our muscles, the more mitochondria we have, the more fuel we burn. Strong muscles preserve their cells; weak muscles slowly lose them through cell death and atrophy. If we don’t’ use our muscles, they shrink and the muscle cells die (thus decreasing our ability to burn fat).
Daily, full body exercise is essential. Counting calories is irrelevant if we’re letting muscles die. Essentrics workouts keep all 650 muscles strong and flexible – and each cell’s mitochondria fully functioning and working efficiently to burn off excess calories in supporting healthy weightloss.

There are scientific studies supporting the idea that the lengthening of muscle cells will make the muscles stronger. Research shows that during an eccentric contraction (which is what is performed in Essentrics), 30% of the neurons stop firing, leaving only 70% of the muscle cells available for recruitment. That remaining 70% must work harder because they are supporting a longer lever – and it is a well known law of physics that ‘the longer the lever, the heavier the load’
